Specials at Poinsettia Make It Special to be Here

THIS WEEK IN THE LIBRARY

Our art teacher, Tara Clark, has been helping me create a welcoming bulletin board at the entrance to the library, and it looks great! I will be displaying the new books received from the Scholastic Book Fair on the shelves in front of it. Ms. Hirschkoff’s class is displaying dioramas of California, much to the thrill of the kinders and first graders, who are trying really hard not to play with them. On display areas above the shelves we have Thanksgiving, Seasonal, Holidays, Native American and California History books, all of which can be checked out.

For the last few weeks the classes have been learning how to search for books on the computer, using basic keywords visual displays. This week the 4th and 5th grades have been watching a film about the Dewey Decimal System, and then practicing what they’ve learned (a little scary). ABC order is still challenging, especially to 3 letters. All students have been read to and are learning the different parts of books, as well as call numbers.

I am in the process of trying to find children’s books written in other languages for our new bilingual section. If anyone has an appropriate book they don’t need written in Japanese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Ukraine, Korean, Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, or Bengali, I would love a donation.

If any parent would like to donate a half hour per week to shelve books it would be much appreciated.

THIS WEEK IN ART

ART students have been studying elements of color theory and learning about the prolific career of American artist, Jackson Pollock.

This week we will be holding the art event SPLATTERAMA.  Students of all grade levels will apply their knowledge of color and Pollock's splatter-paint technique to create an oversize, abstract-expressionist (art that is more about the act of painting and not about what you paint or how it looks when you are done) piece. Four art pieces will be chosen for display in Poinsettia's library with literature on Pollock.   Take a look at this interactive website on the subject and have fun: http://www.jacksonpollock.org/
